Overview

The CS REU projects are based on the Faculty Mentors' research interests and change each summer. Projects are connected to a computer security research in engineering, mathematics and computer science.

When applying, Scholars may select their preference among research projects. These innovative projects involve exploring exciting issues to develop new knowledge, in order to better understand and improve current practices. While the CS REU attempts to match Scholars to their first choice project in the selection process, it is not guaranteed.

Expectations of CS Scholars

Students accepted for the CS REU program are expected to:

  • Participate fully from June 1, 2009 through August 7, 2009. This is a full-time experience and students must be available during regular work hours throughout this period. Some projects may require occasional evening and weekend time.
    • Weekends and evenings are mostly free for personal time as well as exploring the local area, spending time with new friends, and participating in some social activities arranged by the CS REU.
    • Due to the intense nature of the CS REU, enrolling in an academic course at the same time is discouraged. Scholars who wish to enroll in academic courses during the program must gain approval from the CS REU program and their Faculty Mentor. Classtime must not conflict with scheduled work hours.
    • Vacations…The CS REU experience is a collaborative and a continuous experience. Time away from the program interrupts both the research process as well as the team development process. Special circumstances may be considered within each research team on an individual basis.
  • Actively contribute to the research process
  • Attend "CS Scholar Time" Team Training sessions, two hour workshops each week throughout the summer
  • Contribute to the Research Symposium
  • Meet with high school students to demonstrate your research and share your science and engineering experience
  • Participate in evaluating the CS REU program. This includes a focus group and evaluative surveys conducted during the program. Some assessment will be collected during the academic year following participation in the CS REU.
