Women's Transportation Seminar, Washington DC Chapter Scholarship

WTS is an international organization of transportation professionals who are committed to career and industry excellence. While WTS has both male and female members, one of its primary goals is to promote professional development opportunities for women in transportation-related careers. Through more than 30 chapters in the U.S., Canada, and England and with a membership of over 4,000 individuals, WTS provides seminars, newsletters, scholarships, conferences, and networking opportunities for working professionals.
To encourage women pursuing careers in transportation-related fields in the Washington, D.C. region, our Chapter offers graduate and undergraduate scholarships. We anticipate awarding, at a minimum, one graduate scholarship and one undergraduate scholarship to outstanding students during the 2009 – 2010 school year. The scholarship winners could each receive $2,500.

Applicants wishing to be considered by the Washington, DC Chapter must:
- Be women;
- Be enrolled in a college or university where they are pursuing a degree in transportation or in a transportation-related field;
- Have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher;
- Plan to pursue a career in transportation or a transportation-related field; and
- Maintain a permanent residence or attend school in the Washington, DC metropolitan area or greater Virginia.
The WTS Washington, DC Chapter will consider each scholarship candidate who meets all of the above criteria and whose complete application package is received by November 2, 2009. Note that we cannot accept applications by fax or email.

2009 Google Anita Borg Menorial Scholarship

Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.
In her honor, Google is proud to honor Anita’s memory and support women in technology with the 2009 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field.
Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a $10,000 award for the 2009-2010 academic year; Finalists will each receive a $1,000 award. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate’s academic background and demonstrated leadership. All scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to attend the Annual Google Scholars’ Retreat in Mountain View, California on June 25-28, 2009.
Who can apply?
Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria to be eligible:
- be a female student entering her senior year of undergraduate study or be enrolled in a graduate program in the 2009-2010 academic year at a university in the United States;
- be enrolled in Computer Science or Computer Engineering program, or a closely related technical field as a full-time student for the 2009-2010 academic year;
- maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or 4.5 on a 5.0 scale or equivalent in your current program.

How to apply
Complete the online application and submit all required documents online. First-time users will be required to register and create an account.
All applications must be submitted online by Friday, February 6, 2009.
You will be asked to submit:
- your contact information, education and work history,
- answers to three short essay questions,
- a copy of your transcripts (Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD, if applicable),
your resume – with leadership, work, education, and technical accomplishments included, - 2 letters of recommendation.
Finalists will be notified in March 2009. As the final step in the scholarship selection process, all finalists will have phone interviews with representatives from the Google Selection Committee. Scholarship recipients will be selected from among the finalists interviewed.
Access to Education Scholarships

USA Funds will award renewable scholarships to students with economic need through USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships. A nonprofit organization, USA Funds works to enhance postsecondary-education preparedness, access, and success by providing and supporting financial and other valued services.
Applicants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and all U.S. territories and commonwealths are eligible for USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships. Priority consideration for the awards will be given to applicants from Arizona, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, and Wyoming, states that USA Funds serves as the federally designated guarantor of federal student loans, and from Washington and Idaho, states that USA Funds' affiliate Northwest Education Loan Association serves as the federally designated guarantor of student loans.
USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships are open to high-school seniors, currently enrolled college students, or incoming college students who meet the following criteria:
- Plan to enroll or are enrolled in full- or half-time undergraduate or full-time graduate- or professional-degree coursework at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school. GED recipients also are eligible. Students must plan to enroll or be enrolled beginning with the fall-2009 term through February 1, 2010.
- If studying abroad, are attending or planning to attend a postsecondary institution that is eligible to participate in student-aid programs under Title IV of the federal Higher Education Act.
- Have an annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less, as documented on a 2008 federal 1040 income-tax return on which the applicant is claimed as a federal tax exemption
- Are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens. Students studying in the U.S. on an F1 visa are not eligible. Eligible noncitizens must be permanent U.S. resident aliens with a Green Card, or refugees with a Departure Record (Form I-94) from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service showing one of the following designations:
- Refugee
- Asylum granted
- Alien paroled into the United States for at least one year
- Alien granted a stay of deportation due to fear of persecution on account of race, religion, or political opinion
- Conditional entrant (if I-94 was issued before April 1980) - Are not currently in default on a federal education loan.
Students attending postsecondary institutions, such as United States service academies, that do not charge tuition and room and board to the general student body are not eligible to receive awards under this scholarship program.
Scholarships awarded under this program to residents of Alaska, California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington states are made possible with the support of College Spark Washington.
Additionally, up to 50 percent of the scholarship awards will be targeted to applicants who are members of an ethnic-minority group or have a documented physical disability. Ethnic-minority groups are defined as follows:
- Alaskan Native
- American Indian
- Asian
- Black/African-American
- Hispanic or Latino
- Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, individuals are considered to have a disability if they have a physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, have a record of such an impairment or are regarded as having such an impairment. Applicants who are physically disabled must submit a doctor's statement describing the disability, including the degree and limitation on their ability.
The program will award scholarships of $1,500. The scholarships may be renewed annually, if the student maintains a 2.5 grade-point average on a four-point scale, until the continuously enrolled student receives a final degree or certificate, or until the total award to the student reaches $6,000.

Professional Engineers in Industry Scholarship
Deadline: April 1, 2009
Amount: $2,500
The Professional Engineers in Industry (PEI) Scholarship is a one-year scholarship awarded annually to a current engineering undergraduate student enrolled in an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited engineering program.
Applicants must have a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5. Students must have completed a minimum of two semesters or three quarters of engineering undergraduate studies in a program accredited by the ABET. A member of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) must sponsor applicants.
Students who are children, dependents, or relatives of NSPE members are given preference in the scholarship selection process.
