iEngineer@UMD is a summer STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) camp for rising 4th and 5th grade students. This one-week commuter day camp is an exciting opportunity for girls and boys to learn more about STEM through a variety of fun, hands-on activities!
Campers work with current University of Maryland engineering students to help participants gain a better understanding of engineering concepts and real-life applications in our world.
iEngineer@UMD will help campers answer questions like:
- What does it mean to be an engineer?
- What types of jobs can engineers do?
- How do engineers help others?
- Do I want to be an engineer someday?
iEngineer activities vary from year to year, but we always aim to cover the different disciplines of engineering (i.e., Aerospace, Bio, Chemical, Computer, Civil, Electrical, Fire Protection, Mechanical, etc.) so that campers can learn more about what engineers do and what engineering means. We also focus on real-world applications and why engineers make our world a better place. Some favorite past activities (and what they teach campers) include:
- A Week-Long Team Design Project (learn the engineering design process)
- Soda Geysers & Rockets (basic aerodynamic and rocketry principles)
- Secret Alarms (basic circuits)
- Impact Tests (construction, forces, gravity)
- Build a "Green" House (using LEED green design principles)
- Solar Ovens and Solar-Powered Toys (solar energy, environmental principles)
- Bubble Gum-Making (chemicals, polymers)
- Sharpie Tie-Dye (chemicals, mixtures, solvents, solutions)
- Glow Germs (epidemics, medicine, biology)
- CSI Scavenger Hunt (chromatography, pH scales)
- And much more!
Unfortunately, at this time, we cannot accept campers who are not rising 4th or 5th graders.

Campers must bring their own lunch, though snacks are provided throughout the day. Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to offer before- or after-care for campers.

Cost
The program cost is $325.00 for each participant. This fee is due upon acceptance to the program. Please do NOT send the fee with the application.
Note: Full and partial scholarships are available based on financial need. Please inquire via email after acceptance decisions have been made.
The 2012 program is full and no longer accepting applications.
- Online Form
This should be completed by a parent/guardian. However, the Online Form also includes an “About Me” paragraph to be written by the student. (Paper forms are available upon request.) - Teacher Letter of Recommendation
This should be completed by a current math or science teacher. If this is not possible (e.g., due to home-schooling), another teacher or adult besides the child’s parent may complete the recommendation.

Decisions will be mailed on April 13, 2012.
Incomplete applications will not be considered. A confirmation email will be sent when the application package is complete.
